Hi,

I'm new to this forum, but I figured you lot might like to hear of a remix I made of Hide and Seek. I To be honest it's less of a remix than it is the original song with backing music. Everybody seems to like it, though.

I'd love to know what you guys think. It's at http://matrix.theblob.org/music/mp3/hideandseek-strings.mp3 . Be sure to listen to it all.

If this forum hadn't been here, I wouldn't have posted this anywhere public, as I figured remixing and putting the remixed music on the Internet would amount to distributing copyrighted music. So I'm glad that there is a forum on the official site devoted to remixing and encouraging people to show off. Very Happy Maybe someone could enlighten me on the stance on public release on remixes by most artists? I'm not entirely sure.

Thanks, and enjoy!

- Ciaran.

[edit 2: The updated version is at http://matrix.theblob.org/music/mp3/hideandseek2-nodrums.mp3 . It removes the drums and tweaks the strings to be a bit better.].

It's really good. Kind of like a radio version of the song or something! I really like it. I'm assuming you're playing this yourself on your keyboard or something? I really love it. This is the kind of version of H&S I hoped for to be on the single. Only the drum bit was a bit of a 'didn't have to be in it' part:P That's all I can say, other than that..beautiful.

The instrumental parts were done using MIDI in my sequencer (which is ancient by today's standards - it's Cakewalk Professional 6.0, which is more than 10 years old, but it suits my needs. ;p) and my superb synthesiser. Some bits, like the electric piano, were played by me and then quantitised. Other bits, like the strings, were almost all programmed.

I think I agree on the drums. I can make another version without any drums if you'd like. It just didn't seem to sound right without drums, but I can make that version and let people see what they think themselves. Smile

Thanks for the kind comments! Very Happy

I would love a version without the drums. I really like this strings version. It gives the song a whole new meaning to me. Thanks:D

MMmmmhmmm. Very lovely. Of course, I've always been a fan of strings. I don't very much care for the part when the drums come in, it starts getting off.. but excellent otherwise.

Thanks v. much for posting!

I really like it. You've added something to it, but without taking away from the beauty of the song. It's now on my iPod!

Thanks! I appreciate it!

But you might want to replace the version you have on your iPod with this new one - http://matrix.theblob.org/music/mp3/hideandseek2-nodrums.mp3 . It's a version I just did without the drums, and I've also done a bit more tweaking of the strings so they sound even better in some places.

I like both versions, myself. But everybody I spoke to didn't like the rhythm, so I guess I'm alone in that. Very Happy I do think this sounds better, though. See what you make of this version.

Oh, poo. I just realised I hadn't put any ID3 tags on that file. I've put some temporary ID3 tags on for the moment, and you're welcome to listen, but if want to save it or put it on an iPod or anything, wait for me to put the entire set of ID3 tags on first, please. Smile

Okay, I've put the full set of ID3 tags on there. Feel free to download it and do whatever you want now. Very Happy http://matrix.theblob.org/music/mp3/hideandseek2-nodrums.mp3

Hey! Thanks for posting your updated version too!

To be honest, I didn't really mind the drums, but I agree I prefer your updated version. The drums were probably unneccessary then.

But both versions are on my iPod now! Very Happy Thankyou!

Thanks! Smile Yeah, I don't like the drums much either. I've made sure the non-drums version gets some notice by putting up a page on my site about the tune, which contains links to both versions.

The non-drums version is better in a lot of ways too because it has other fixes to the tune too, making it, on the whole, much more pleasant to listen to in my opinion. Very Happy

Ciaran,

Noone had gotten back to you on your copyright question, so let me be the first. Technically everything that has been done on this forum is illegal. If they wanted, Imogen's lawyers could sue every single one of us. The copyright law does not allow unauthorized copying of intellectual property for whatever the reason. So, contrary to what most people believe it's not even about trying to make a profit out of someone's creative output. The copyright law gives complete control to the owner, which at first you may find reasonable, but on second thought it's not clear this monopoly makes the society is better off. I mean look here, Imogen's music has inspired all of us, and we have all produced something - good or bad - based on her music. She's better off, because all this is promotion for her, I'm certainly better off because I felt productive doing a remix and got appreciated by others , the listeners are better off as well cause simply they have more to listen to. I guess you see my point by now; the copyright law does not always make sense, and it's been getting worse and seriously outdated.

There's much more to be said, but I don't want to take up much space here . I highly recommend Lawrence Lessig's "free culture" to everyone if you want to read more. It was a big eye-opener for me.

Wow that sounds amazing....I like the no drum version better because it keeps the sadness of the song. But wow yeah your amazing good job!

i dunno.. while beautiful, the strings just make it a little too '80s for me. some people actually liked the '80s though, so that's good news.. the whole vocoder thing is already sort of pushing the song towards a cheesy retro vibe, and the string synth sort of seals the deal. it's one or the other.

of course, i have a profound, profound hatred for pretty much all '80s music, so it isn't really your fault i don't like it.
