So, I've had a week back home visiting the family and not much to do, so I had a little bit of fun with my Immi songs. What I've done is imported them into Audacity, a free sound file editing program, and performed a little trick where you split the file into separate tracks, change both channels to Mono and then "Invert" one of the tracks and recombine them. Basically, this kind of screws up the mix, generally cancelling out the lead vocal along with other things depending on the song. Sometimes, it'll leave some parts of the mix alone that you normally can't hear very well, making them much more prominent. In certain parts of some songs, it'll let you hear the harmonizing or other backing vocals all by themselves, or even just some interesting part of the instrumental that you normally don't notice.
Anyway, I've gone through my Immi albums and picked out the most interesting portions and combined them into one track for each album so you can all have a listen. Here they are:

You can stream the files from the download page rather than download them, if you'd prefer.
Also, I randomly discovered that I can achieve this effect by listening to the songs with headphones that aren't completely inserted into the jack. You kind of have to play with it to find the "sweet spot", but for some reason it does the exact same thing as the procedure I performed in Audacity. It may only work with certain headphone jacks, however. |

Cool!
I think the iMegaphone one was especially interesting to hear, because I always thought that layering her own voice in that special "Immi way" was something she learnt from Guy Sigsworth, but apparently she did it even before Frou Frou.
Now I have to listen to iMegaphone again in order to try to hear all those layers!
It must have taken you a lot of time doing this, Kev23. I'm in awe. |

Oh my!! I just tried an experiment doing this procedure with acapella tracks that I made using the ellipse instrumentals, and it looks like yet another interesting way to listen to the tracks....I'm gonna have lots more fun!! |
